Step by step: A guide to choosing the correct LED step lighting system
[edit] About the step guide
A how-to guide from Gradus for a step-by-step breakdown of system selection, compliance criteria, and installation best practices.
For Architectural Technologists, step lighting isn’t just a design flourish, it’s a compliance-critical detail that demands technical rigour. The right LED system enhances safety, supports accessibility, and integrates seamlessly with the built environment.
[edit] Step 1 Select the right profile
Profile selection matters: Start by matching the stair nosing profile to the step geometry and floorcovering thickness. Gradus offers PVC-u and aluminium options, with gauges suited to everything from resilient finishes to 12mm stone. This ensures flush installation and reduces trip risk.
[edit] Step 2 Achieve the correct slip-resistance for the conditions
Prioritise slip resistance: BS 8300-2:2018 and BS 5395-1:2010 require inserts with a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) above 36. Gradus Xtra-grip and Xtra-grip Plus inserts meet this benchmark, making them ideal for high-traffic environments like healthcare and education.
[edit] Step 3 Defining the step edge in normal and low-light conditions
Ensure visual contrast: A minimum 30-point Light Reflectance Value (LRV) difference between nosing and adjacent floorcoverings is essential for visibility. This supports compliance with Approved Document M and BS 8493, enhancing safety for all users.
[edit] Step 4 Select an LED Lighting System and LED colour
Choose the right lighting system: Lighting direction—upward, downward, forward—should suit the space.
[edit] Step 5 Combine with control equipment for increased flexibility
Gradus systems include Impression (LED tape), Continuity (fibre optic rods), and Interlok Advance (pinpoint LEDs), with RGB options for ambience control and smart integration via DALI, DMX, or 0-10V protocols.
